If you're like most computer users, you're obsessed with security—and
rightfully so. You dutifully update your antivirus software, run your spyware
scanners and try to play it smart on the web, but there's a whole set of
worries you're not even sure how to address. What happens if your PC is
stolen? What happens if you forget the password to a critical website? Can
just anyone copy valuable data off your PC with a USB drive or a CD-ROM?
Thankfully, if you have an HP desktop or notebook PC, you have formidable
security software already installed and waiting for you to activate and use
it. HP ProtectTools provides a comprehensive set of features to secure your
system against a wide variety of security threats. In this quick lesson,
you'll learn how to configure and use three critical components of HP
ProtectTools:
-
Device Access Manager: Prevents the copying of your data
from your hard drive onto removable media.
-
Full Volume Encryption: Locks down your data by making it
unreadable to anyone who does not know your specific logon information.
-
Credential Manager: Holds, secures and maintains all of
your passwords and logons in a single location for ease of use and enhanced
security.
To begin, you need to verify that you have HP ProtectTools installed on your
system. You can do this in one of two ways:
-
Check the system tray at the bottom right of your screen (near the clock)
for a small golden shield as shown below in Figure 1. If you see the
shield, double-click it to open the HP ProtectTools Security Manager.
Figure 1: HP ProtectTools is the golden shield in the system tray.
-
If you don't see the shield in your system tray, select Start >
All Programs. HP ProtectTools should be available in the list of
installed applications.
If you have an HP dc5000-series Business Desktop, HP ProtectTools is
available for purchase on the HP Security Solutions page.
The HP ProtectTools Security Manager serves as the single console from which
all HP ProtectTools modules can be accessed, providing easy access in a
friendly interface.
Next, you'll learn how to enable Device Access Manager.
