Lesson 5: Configuring an email server

Posted: Jun. 18

This lesson will describe how various email servers interact to send and receive email. You'll learn how to select an email application for your business, configure an email server and secure the system you put in place.

In the Assignment section, it says: "... just press the PrtScrn button on your keyboard, open Microsoft Word, press Ctrl+C...",
while to insert the Screenshot I'd rather use Ctrl+V key combination.

Thanks, Dan! I agree on the screenshot and will ask the course administrators to make that change.

Is it possible to configure an email server in a peer to peer network? If so how can this be done?

It's possible. You'd have to set up one of the computers on the network to be the server, so you'd need to run something like Microsoft Exchange on it.

Why would you want to do this? If your network is that small, you might be better off using something like Google Apps to host your domain, rather than trying to host your own email server.

Best regards,
Mike

Thanks Mike,am actually asking on behalf of my friend, they are a smaller organisation with about 20 computers and they are not connected to the internet. They simply want to setup an email server for basic communication. Google Apps might require them to go online.

In that case, you could certainly do this, although I would recommend purchasing a dedicated server that won't also be used as a user's workstation, just to ensure reliability. In that size environment, you could probably use the same server to provide file sharing and other services as well.

Mike

Yes, the email server would need to run some type of email server software. Microsoft Exchange is the most common example.

Mike
