Lesson 1 - getting started ...

Posted: Jun. 18

This first lesson provides a strong overview of a lot of concepts related to the design of your website. In this class, you may learn a lot and start building your website, but you will probably go back and start a redesign fairly soon simply because it's hard to think as long as you may need to about your web site before you design it for this class. That's OK too because as you start a beginning website, you will discover things along the way that you didn't think about before.

Quick tip: Click View all Pages at the top of the lesson to see the entire lesson without having to move from page to page.

The assignment for this lesson is to do some research on site maps. This is not to get you to copy another site's map, but primarily to get you thinking about the structure of your web site. Remember, a web site is a collection of pages all designed to meet a purpose, so getting a strong design in the beginning -- even if it changes later -- is essential to your web site design.

Take a look at the assignment and take the quiz when you can. Remember, you will have lots of feedback as you take your quizzes, so even wrong answers are a way to reinforce what you've learned.

I'll see you in the message forum if you have any questions!

Virginia

Web-site map, such as www.adobe.com/products/...
In the adobe web-site, it has a lot of "branches' theat link to different pages.

I hope this is what you've asked for my 1stClass assignment. I didnot see the "quiz" part. Please help.

Hi Virginia,
This lesson was really good. i had actually started to put my idea into book form when i 'bumped' into this tutorial on the internet (i bump into a lot of awesome stuff!)and thought that a website was a better idea, so i had a lot of lesson one work already done. your ideas have helped clarify the purpose and give a good overview of what the finished product will look like. i just hope my vision is still as clear as i progress through the next lessons. thanks for the clarity and simply explained tips :)

jwong3585, you do not have to turn in homework to me. Please see the posts in the Getting Started forum to better understand how this class works. Also, you can find the quizzes just the same as you would find the lessons: click My Classes, select this class from the list and there you have Lessons, Assignments, and Quiz.

Hope this helps.

Maria ... thanks for the good info! Sounds like you are on the right track.

Very interesting stuff. I looked at several site maps for websites similar to what I might do and was amazed at few had decent, helpful site maps. Some had none at all. I learned alot from the "bad" ones. I can see now how fluid this project must be.

I have stalled in the first lesson! I am having trouble thinkging of something to build a site of. Some interests are crafting, jack russle terriers, water colour, and my husbands retail store. I job is in an R&D lab. I don't surf much and don't know how much stuff I will need to build a web site.

Do you have any sugestions?

thanx

I was very inspired by a site map that I would aspire to create. It involves Macromedia Flash and Dreamweaver.
When stripped down to the bare essentials, it seems to lack the allure and excitement these tools provide. My question is, are there tools for dummies that simulate what these mega programs do?

To 67Cobra, I suggest that at least for the course you pick one and go with it. You'll learn the techniques and then you can toss it out and start your 'real' site. Don't let picking the topic slow your learning down. I understand you have many interests (congrats!), but pick something for the course, then revise later. That's my suggestion.
