Lesson 6 - promoting your site with metatags
Posted: Jun. 18
Metatags are descriptors about your pages used by browsers and search engines to find your product, service, or whatever your web site advertises. Metatags are included inside the <head> tags of your pages - usually on the 'home' page of your web site, but sometimes on all pages.
To view the source of any web page, right-click that page and select View Source. You will see a whole host of stuff - tags, content, comments and more. If you like what someone has done, you can take a look at how they accomplished that particularly clever thing you like.
Warning: Use their ideas, don't copy their tags and content!
Using that house-sitting service idea, the meta tags might look like this:
<TITLE>House Sitters R' Us</TITLE>
<META name="keywords" content="house, sitter, pets, vacation">
<META name="description" content="Welcome to House Sitters R' Us">
Of course, you might have more keywords, but this gives you the basic idea. Also, look up 'search engine optimization' for details about how to optimize your pages for search engine retrieval.
