I think the best thing you can do in that case is get some hands-on experience working with servers. Do you have an extra computer at home or work that you can configure as a server and experiment with some of the techniques covered in this course?

Best regards,
Mike

Is there any class in particular that you would recommend for security topics?

Yes, there's a class running right now called "Protect your PC from spam, spyware and viruses" that you might want to give a try.

HP also runs some business-oriented security courses from time-to-time, so keep your eyes open and one may pop up in the near future.

Mike

Hello Mike,

Curious as to who writes the course material for HP Learning online learning courses? As an example of what I am asking is did you write the course materials for "Servers 101" or does HP have a staff to prepare the courses and have someone as yourself present it?

This is only asked out of thinking about it.

V/R,
Dave

Is there a way to tell how long these classes should take to complete in hours?

Dave,

I did happen to write this course, but it's not always true that the instructor who teaches the course is the person who wrote it. For example, there are courses I've written that other instructors are teaching and courses I'm teaching that other instructors have written.

Best regards,
Mike

Subter,

There aren't any set guidelines, but I would think the course would take between 8-12 hours to complete.

Best regards,
Mike

Mike, the example in lesson 3 looks to me like an example of how to add a network printer to a workstation. Since this is a server admin class, should there be a example of how to add the printer to the server itself? The way I understand it would be done is to log in to the server, add the printer, browse for the printer, add it as a local printer using a local port that points to the IP address of the printer, and load the drivers directly on the server. Is this correct?

DickW,

The instructions provided in the course are for Windows Small Business Server 2003.

If you're referring to using Windows Server 2008 to share printers, you do that through the Print Management tool. Here's a Microsoft article with an overview of the process and links to more detailed references:

Mike
