802.11n

Posted: Aug. 10

Let it be noted that 802.11n is no longer in draft form as stated in the Lesson. I am using it on my home network.

Uh gee, I dunno about that. The IEEE is the standards body that governs 802.11n and according to the most current Status report at http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/11/Reports/tgn_update.htm it still hasn't been approved. I searched the Web carefully and couldn't find any credible statements to the contrary. What's your source for this information, please?

I'm happy to update the course materials, but ideally the IEEE 802.11n task group would be publishing a press release that says something like "802.11n standard finally approved" or something similar.

Here's a story to the contrary in fact, from one of my favorite sources at Maximum PC: 802.11n Standard Should be Approved by September (http://www.maximumpc.com/article/news/80211n_standard_should_be_approved_september).

Comments? Sources?

Hi Ed,

Not sure what's going on but there are many manufacturers offering wirelessN routers based on the 802.11n draft. So is it draft vs. adopted that has me confused?

Even though the 802.11n has been in draft status for the past three years, vendors have been selling "draft n" gear for over two years (I have two notebook PCs, a couple of WAPs, and several network interfaces, USB and PCIe, all of which support draft n). That is indeed what probably confused you.

The good news is that the n standard is almost certified, and that most draft n devices will work with standard n devices quite well. There may be some advanced features that draft n devices won't support, but they will still run at least twice as fast as 802.11g devices, if not faster than that--and that is what most users/buyers care about anyway.

Re: 802.11n Approved on 9/11/2009

Posted: Oct. 12 (Edited Oct. 12)

Just a quick follow-up to report that the IEEE issued an informal stamp of approval for 802.11n on 9/11/2009 in the form of an e-mail from the task group's chairperson. There are lots of stories on this topic, but here's one from NetworkWorld that hits all the important points: http://www.networkworld.com/news/2009/091109-80211n-approved.html?ts0hb&story=11nstd.

Interestingly, I still can't find a formal announcement of approval from the IEEE, not even on the IEEE P802.11 Task Group N meeting update reports at http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/11/Reports/tgn_update.htm. Very strange...
