Setting up wireless

Posted: Oct. 17

I have a question about wireless. I found instructions for setting up wireless from my server. I was reading all the instructions and started the process. Right away it asks for the username and password. I understand this since it's my server. It was to get the information I needed for the modem involved. But then a box pops up asking if I want to do this. Said it was insecure. Hard to beleive your server would have you put your password on a insecure site. I cancelled the process. Need more info or just call server. I thought maybe it was just my security. Is it all right to continue this. I would rather do it myself. I had the instructions on my home computer, and was working on my laptop.

This probably indicates use of WEP (Wired Equivalent Security) or some older wireless security regimen. Unless you replace your wireless hardware with something newer and more secure, you don't have much choice about this: you either take the chance, or don't use wireless at all (or buy something different, of course).

Your call. If you live in a lightly populated suburban neighborhood, you could be OK; if you live in a more densely populated area it may not be wise to continue.

Thanks,
I tried to set it up, but my password failed. I was too find out my SSID. It asked for my user name and password. I thought it meant the one for my internet service. I put it in but it failed. Then I thought maybe the administrater name and my password for my laptop. It failed too. I guess I will have to call my server. I was looking forward to doing it myself. Any ideas about this.

Dear Phyll:

It probably wants the administrative credentials for your wireless router/device. If you haven't changed those from the manufacturer default, let me know what kind of device you've got (Mfgr, make, and model) and I can probably look it up online for you. Do you know your SSID? If not, I may also have to provide you with a tool that can look it up for you, too.

Best wishes,

When I go to the page to get the SSID, it asks for my username and password. It wouldn't give me access to the number until I did this.

Dear Phyll:
I'm not clear from your answer if you still need any help or not. Please post again if you need additional assistance. Sounds like you did present the right credentials to get the SSID. Is that right?

I lost my wireless connection and it was a long dragged out experience. I just went through setting up wireless and it was a nightmare. I ended up calling Belkin and come to find out my Belkin needed and upgrade. They walked me through all the steps which involved unplugging Belkin and router and changin passwords. Call the company who makes it.

I'm planning on calling my server for the SSID #. I just haven't gotten it done yet. I don't know if they wanted my username and password or not. It wouldn't accept it so I don't think so. This was when I was going to the page to get the #. The address for the website was all numbers. I have a Siemens Gigaset SE 567. But you don't have to look it up, as I will call in a day or two. Thanks for your help.

Dear Phyll:

There's a link to a PDF version of the user's manual for your Gigaset SE 567 at http://gigaset.com/shc/0,1935,hq_en_0_138495_rArNrNrNrN,00.html

Grab this first, and read about the administrative login. Usually you do this through your Web browser with an address like http://192.168.0.1 and use a default account and password to get into the configuration and setup (on my D-Link 655, the account name is "admin" and the password is "password", for example).

Once you get access to the admin controls for your DSL router, you'll be able to set the SSID yourself and to get everything working properly. Try this first, before you call tech support. It's probably the first thing they'll tell you try anyway!

I DID IT. FINALLY!!
The user name and password was admin. I had been thinking about this. The examples showed this. I just thought it was a example. Now my computer shows a wireless network avaiable. But I can't log on. At the end of the setup a box came up. It had user name, password and local domain. I used the ones from my internet and my laptop. Didn't work. At the end of the setup a window came up with a lot of things on it. The only one that was checked was the password. I think I should of unchecked it. My daughter is on the same one, and they don't have to have a password. Now I don't know how to get the window back up to uncheck it.
I sure have learned a lot from this. It was really simple to set up. It's the little things that cause trouble.
I still have to use a password to get on my laptop. I would like to reset this, but not sure how.
Any suggestions on getting rid of the password on both.
Phyll
