Protect the document but don't encrypt the content

Posted: Oct. 19

Since upgrading to Adobe Acrobat Pro, I find that protecting the document from changes requires the content to be encrypted (unless the users have upgraded to Reader Version 9). I can keep the metadata from encryption by specifying available back to Version 7. Is there a way to protect the document from changes, without encypting the content, while keeping the file available to users who may not have upgraded to Reader v. 7 or 9? I would like Google to have access to the content for display and search purposes. thank you.

Not that I am aware of. But I'm afraid you've gotten into a topic that I am not very familiar with: SEO Optimization. I would suggest posting your question in a user group such as one of these:

Thank you, Karin, for your reply. I followed your suggestion and received the following from Lori Kassuba of Adobe / Acrobatusers.

>>> The password security in Acrobat has changed a bit but mainly it’s been associated with the encryption routine. Earlier versions encrypted all the content but later versions allowed you to exclude metadata.
If you’re posting PDFs on the web, and you’d like to have some search engine visibility, then under password security you would select “Encrypt all document contents except metadata (Acrobat 6 and later compatible).
I don’t suppose everyone visiting your site would have Reader 9 (256 AES encryption) so you might want to choose password security for an earlier version – perhaps 7 <<<
