sharing a printer

Posted: Oct. 20 (Edited Oct. 20)

Hi Roger,
I have cable modem connection to the internet with both computers connected. My desktop is connected thru a router, runs XP and has the printer directly attached. My laptop runs VISTA and prints if plugged into the USB port. What port setting should be on the laptop when accessing the printer remotely (in the next room). I'm trying to follow the directions in the lesson but it doesn't address the port settings or doesn't it matter. I have tried the other suggestions in the other posts re:XP & VISTA. I also looked & update the printer drivers for VISTA. Something is missing for me. Help please!

Normally you do not have to specify a port setting but you do run the Add a Printer Wizard and select "A network printer or a printer attached to another computer" rather than a local printer. Next, when you choose "conect to this printer" but do not put in a printer name (or anything) you should get a listing of shared printers on your network. Choose your printer and continue with the wizard. After you finish the wizard, you might have to restart your PC before you use the printer.

Let me know how it goes or - if not - what happened and any error messages, if you can see the printer in your network neighborhood etc.

Good luck

Roger

Thanks for getting back. 90% there! They are networked! It shows up in a local port. Shows up in the print queue on both computers but still will not print. Status says error. I reset the network defaults in the printer. Its an Officejet 6310 and prints when plugged into both XP & VISTA. Tried printing from the XP thru the network and get the same error. Other suggestions?

You will often get unusual (bad) results if you try to specify the same printer as local and remote (running the new printer wizard twice) If the Vista prints when the USB is attached, it may interfere with setting up the remote sharing until you delete the 'local' printer. Try this:

With the printer NOT attached to the system, open 'printers and faxes' from the control panel and delete the printer from the list.

Restart your system

Run the Add a Printer wizard and add the printer as a remote printer (as mentioned in the previous post)

Now what happens when you try to print?

Success! Still had to use the install disk & get a driver update for it to print and it worked. Thanks for your assistance! These classes with instructors are very helpful.
