XP and Windows 7 ?

Posted: Oct. 20

I just joined the class, as my 5 yr old laptop just broke and I need a new one.

When we bought two new computers in 2007, they came with a coupon for a Vista upgrade, which we never used. Everything is working well right now with the network described below.

I have a choice of a new laptop with XP or Windows 7. Will it work with the system I describe below?

We have broadband service through our local telephone company. Currently we have 2 laptops and 2 desktops, all with XP, and a Kerocera KM-1860 printer. They are connected with a Westell modem supplied by the telephone company, and a Lynksys broadband-G 2.4GHZ, 802.11g router. The copier dealer networked the printer for us. We have not yet attempted to network files among the computers.

Any help appreciated. Hope someone reads this soon. Thanks, Suzanne

Hi Suzanne and welcome to the class!

I was never much of a Vista fan but I am getting a better feeling about Windows 7. However, each situation is different and whether to upgrade or not will depends on several considerations. For one thing, the choice of keeping XP is not going to last much longer. Soon, any new system will come with Win 7 pre-installed. So perhaps you should get the ball rolling sooner rather than later. On the other hand, if you have custom applications or legacy applications without much ongoing support the move to Windows 7 could cause real headaches (eg I couldn't find any info on that Kyocera printer). To get some insight on these and other issues you might want to check out a recent article on the factors affecting that decision:

I would be interested to hear what you consider your primary motivators to stick with XP or jump to Win 7.

Roger, thanks for the information. I have decided to stay with XP for two reasons. We could not determine if the copier on our network was ready for 7.0, nor the business software that I use.

Due to a timing constraint, we decided to stay with XP for now. Down the road, switch everything to 7.0 when the questions with the two items above have been answered.

Many businesses wait for the same types of reasons. I am considering setting up a box to get started on Windows 7 but most of the questions coming to me are going to be XP and Vista for some time to come so those will remain my main operating systems. Can't help being a little excited about Win 7 though. Maybe I am a victim of the hype but it sounds pretty promising.
