Internet error message

Posted: Oct. 22

Hi, Am I too late to ask a question? I'll try it. Two days ago I tried to open the internet. It gave me the message "Your last browsing session closed unexpectedly. Would you like to restore your last session, or go to your home page?" Now I get it every time I open the internet. I have XP and using the IE8.

Also how do I know which temporary files (cookies) to delete? I might have deleted a wrong one when I tried it out the other day. There are a lot of them where you can check on each one or choose all of them.

Thanks to anyone who might answer this.

Would you be willing to have a very pleasurable browsing experience...download Firefox 3.5.3 for Windows at www.mozilla.com

That being said...If you choose "go to your Home Page"
in IE 8 it should cancel out the pop-up. I will admit I almost never use IE period although I do have IE 8 too. I use FF for most of my browsing and Opera for the rest.

Deleting temporary files and cookies should not pose a problem and is recommended in any browser (although cookies by themselves do not pose a problem). You will always get a new cookie when you go to a site anyway.

In IE 8 which I do use to go to MS Windows update & little else..I have everything checked to delete except "passwords" (that's my choice) but again, I don't use IE for browsing.
If you have the IE Icon on your desktop, you can right click it and put a check mark in "delete browsing history on exit" and go to "delete" and put a check mark in everything except passwords /or you may choose to leave a check mark in "preserve favorites website data" (your choice)

If you don't have an IE Icon on your Desktop, you can go to Start>Control Panel>Internet Options & do the same.

Let me know if this helped

Thanks a lot Mike. Sure glad you're still here. Your suggestions were great. I was hitting the wrong button for the error message.

Regarding the temporary files (cookies); aren't there two ways to delete temporary files? One when you do a disk check and one in the following place: Internet Options, Internet Properties, Temporary Internet Files & History Setting, Browsing History, Settings, View Files?

I think I got that right but not sure. Anyway, when I get there I see probably over 100 cookies. Some say "owner", some "customer". I clicked on one of them and got the message, "Running a system command on this item might be unsafe. Do you wish to continue? I don't know, do I? Also some of them have MSN or microsoft in them. Should I leave them alone? I thought the Disk Check (Disk cleanup?) was suppose to get rid of these things. Must not. And I'm probably using the wrong term but I'm trying to get this done before you disappear and don't want to take the time to look it up. Hope you know what I'm talking about.

While under Browsing History, could you please address another problem? In "View Objects" what should I do with them. Same of them say "Damaged", some "Unknown". Would it completely mess up my old computer to delete them - or all of the listed objects?

Sorry to be so ignorant. If you don't have the time to address these problems - after all, I understand this is not your job - that's okay. But if you could enlighten me I would be very grateful.

You're welcome - I'm not going anywhere till the class ends meaning I will check in now and then.

Yes those are the two most commmon ways. However, Disk Cleanup doesn't get rid of cookies, Internet options does (if checked).......................

However, neither way gets rid of all temp files ..
Some are "hidden'.

You can delete the cookies if you want to (I do) but again, cookies are not harmful

You shouldn't be clicking them as like it says "running a system command on this item may be unsafe"
You want to delete them (which I do) [again, if your browsing history, cookies etc are cleared, when you go back to a site they will issue you another cookie again anyway]. Doesn't matter if it's Microsoft, MSN or any other site..each will issue you a new one if deleted.

For instance I'm using Opera Browser for this class so I don't have to put in my user name & password each tim I come back to class...in this instance I am not deleting the cookie for HP Learning Center so I have quick access to the class.

Under Browsing History "View Objects" ...you don't want to be in there and most assuredly you don't want to delete those files [They are Downloaded Program Files (like Java)]- this applies to all three buttons "Move folder", View objects", & "View files".
Under "View Files" you will find some cookies that do not need to be removed....again, no reason for you to be in there anyway.

It's good that you are asking questions...I hope I've been of some help.

You have been a tremendous help (I wish they had spell check for these messages). Thank you so much. Do I understand that the 100+ cookies won't take up my disk space and I should just ignore them? That's probably a stupid question but I just had to ask for verification.
Thanks again.

Yes, cookies do not take up much space at all. It is fine to leave them be.
