This is a great overview/list of tips how to be energy efficient. The question I was hoping to learn is when to replace ineffecient hardware. For example newer server hardware CPU's are more power efficient (you get more done for with the same power) but when you get everything done already with your old hardware how does one decide it is cost/environmental effective to replace. How do you calculate that the power consumption will go down if you replace with a newer server and how much costs will that save. (usage by server and airco in your datacenter). There is little emphasis that the heat generated by a server also needs to be dispensated by the airco of the datacenter. So 1 Watt saved on a server can be 2x1 watt or more in total.
It would really help if some formulas and tips on how to find the actual use of old/new equipment would be given.
